Want A Few Graphics With That Site?
Without a doubt, graphics can make or break a Web site! Everyone loves to see a colorful picture bring a site to life.
But as everyone that has been on the Internet more than a few minutes knows, those same graphics that were put on the page to attract and entertain an audience can be the same graphics that bore them and drive them away! Nothing will annoy visitors more than having to wait, and wait, and wait for your pages to load...
Before placing any graphic on a page you should stop, and ask yourself a few questions:
- Does the page really need a graphic?
- Is the graphic you've chosen really appropriate, or are you putting it on the page simply because you can?
- Does it add something to the page content?
- Does it explain the page topic better than text could?
- How large is the file size? How long will it take to download?
A good example is this page. The graphic at the top of the page is actually an HTML table with a colored background. It isn't a graphic that needs to download separately but an actual part of the page coding. The second graphic with the attractive background is appropriate and eye-catching yet is less than 8K in file size. It will load in less than 3 seconds with a 28.8K connection.
